Christmas Royalty
When it comes round to Christmas time, you’ve probably heard of – or at least sung in carols about - the Prince of Peace and the King of Kings. However, did you know there is now a Queen of Christmas as well? And it is none other than Mariah Carey!
What???
OK, I know she recorded the most streamed holiday song in history (“All I Want for Christmas is You” in case you’re wondering). But does that really call for a title of royalty up there with Jesus, whose birth Christmas is really all about?
Apparently she and her fans think so. After all, this year she has expanded the reach of her “Holiday-Themed Pop Up Bars” from two cites to eight. According to the article I read recently in people.com, the cocktail experience is returning for its “biggest, most Mariah-fied season yet.”
“The holidays are my favorite time of year, and I love finding new ways to share the magic with my fans,” Carey said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “This year, we’re making my holiday bars even more fabulous and bringing the celebration to more cities than ever before! Think festive cocktails, wall-to-wall sparkle, and plenty of surprises. I can’t wait for everyone to celebrate with us!”
In addition to choosing from a cocktail menu with drinks such as Make My Wish Come True, MC Toasted Tini, and Imperfect Angel, attendees will experience “a winter dreamscape oasis worthy of The Queen of Christmas.”
“Guests will be transported into wall-to-wall Mariah-inspired décor, chart topping interactive moments, and surprises designed to celebrate her signature glamour at every turn,” the description adds. “A must-visit destination for both die-hard Carey fans and holiday lovers alike.”
Now, I’m a holiday lover, but a Mariah-themed holiday bar is just about the last place I would want to spend an evening in December. I can’t see myself finding a deeper meaning (or any meaning, for that matter) for the season over a glass of Carey’s Black Irish cream liqueur staring at an artificial Christmas tree gaudily decorated with her records and backed by a floor-to-ceiling poster of the sheet music of “All I Want for Christmas.”
Is that really all we want for Christmas?
I sure hope not, and I will do everything I can to make Christmas something more, something better, something spiritually meaningful.
However, should I not succeed, all I can say is this: Move over Jesus, Prince of Peace and King of Kings. You’ve been upstaged by the Queen of Christmas….
